Accounting Resume Examples: Bullets by Role and a Sample Layout
A strong accounting resume opens with a short summary naming the kind of books you keep, the systems you keep them in and one piece of proof: a close you shortened, an audit with no findings, a reconciliation backlog you cleared. Each job then gets three to six bullets about accuracy, deadlines, volume and controls, and a compact skills block lists the software and credentials the posting asks for. Below are accounting resume examples written as bullets for six common roles, a sample layout you can copy, and a quick way to aim the same resume at every firm you apply to.
People hiring accountants read for two things before anything else: can this person be trusted with the numbers, and have they worked at our scale. A bookkeeper for a ten-person company and a senior accountant at a group with four entities do different jobs under similar titles. Every line on the page should make your scale and your reliability obvious.
What a hiring manager checks first
Before reading the bullets, most people hiring for a finance team look for:
- Your close cycle. Monthly, quarterly, year end. Which parts you owned and how long it took.
- Your systems. QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Sage, SAP, Oracle, and how deep you go in Excel.
- Your scale. Number of entities, invoices a month, vendors, accounts you reconciled, the size of the ledger in plain words.
- Your credentials. CPA, CMA, EA or progress toward one, and whether you are licensed in their state.
- Audit and control exposure. Whether you have prepared schedules for auditors, worked under SOX, or designed a control.
If the top third of the page does not say what you closed, in which system and at what size, many readers will stop there.
The sections of an accounting resume, in order
| Section | What goes in it | Keep it to |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn | Two lines |
| Summary | Role type, systems, one piece of proof | Three sentences |
| Experience | Each job: company, title, dates, then 3 to 6 bullets | Most of the page |
| Skills | Software, Excel functions, standards (GAAP, IFRS), tax areas | One compact block |
| Certifications | CPA, CMA, EA, CIA, with state and year | One to three lines |
| Education | Degree, school, year, credit hours if you are working toward the CPA | Two lines |
For the summary, How to Write a Resume Summary has a three-sentence formula that suits finance roles. For the credentials block, How to List Certifications on a Resume covers the format, including how to show an exam in progress.
How to write accounting resume bullets
The weak version of an accounting bullet is the job description: “Responsible for accounts payable”, “Performed reconciliations”, “Assisted with month-end close”. The strong version adds volume, speed or accuracy, and what got better. Use this pattern:
Action + what you handled (and how much) + the result, deadline or control.
| Duty-style bullet | Specific bullet |
|---|---|
| Responsible for accounts payable | Processed about 400 vendor invoices a month across two entities with three-way matching in NetSuite |
| Performed reconciliations | Reconciled 14 bank and credit card accounts monthly and cleared a six-month backlog of unmatched items |
| Assisted with month-end close | Owned accruals, prepaids and fixed asset entries for the monthly close, delivered by day five |
| Worked with auditors | Prepared PBC schedules for the annual audit, which closed with no adjusting entries in my areas |
Use your real figures. Where you do not know a number, describe the scope in words (“all vendor payments for the US entity”). A guessed percentage is the first thing a finance interviewer will ask you to explain.

Skills to list on an accounting resume
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Accounting systems | NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, Sage Intacct, SAP, Oracle |
| Excel | XLOOKUP, pivot tables, Power Query, macros |
| Standards and rules | US GAAP, IFRS, ASC 606, ASC 842, SOX |
| Processes | Month-end close, reconciliations, accruals, consolidation, audit support |
| Tax | Sales tax, 1099 reporting, payroll tax filings |
List only what the posting asks for and you can actually do. A long list of systems you touched once dilutes the ones you use daily.
How to aim one accounting resume at each posting
Accounting postings say exactly what they want, and they use different words for similar work. One firm writes “general ledger maintenance”, another “GL ownership”, a third “record to report”. The fastest way to match is:
- Copy the posting and mark every system, standard and process it names.
- Check which of those you have done, and where on your resume each appears.
- Rewrite three or four bullets and the summary so they use the posting’s words for work you really did.
- Move the most relevant job’s bullets so the closest match is first.
How to Find Keywords in a Job Description walks through step one in ten minutes, and How to Tailor a Resume to a Job Description covers the rest.
When you are applying to many firms in a busy hiring season, rewriting each version is where the time goes. InstaResume writes the tailored parts for you: paste your existing resume and the posting, and you get bullets, a summary or a cover letter aimed at that job in a few minutes (one per generation), using the posting’s language wherever your background actually supports it. It works from what you wrote and does not invent experience, and you paste the result into your own resume. You can try it without signing up.
When the manual way is enough
If you are applying to two or three roles that look alike, the four steps above take a short evening and you keep full control of every word. Tools earn their place when the postings pile up and each one asks for something a little different.
Common mistakes on accounting resumes
- Listing duties instead of scope. “Performed reconciliations” says nothing about how many, how often or how clean.
- Hiding the system. A NetSuite shop wants to see NetSuite near the top.
- Leaving out audit work. Preparing schedules for auditors is evidence that your work holds up to review.
- A vague credential line. Write “CPA, Illinois, 2024” or “CPA candidate, passed FAR and AUD”, never just “CPA track”.
- Typos and inconsistent numbers. In a field built on accuracy, a misaligned date or a wrong total costs more than anywhere else.

One page suits most people with under ten years of experience. Senior accountants and controllers often need two. How Long Should a Resume Be? covers when to cut.
How do I write an accounting resume with no experience?
Lead with your degree, relevant coursework, any internship or tax clinic work, and the software you have used. Resume Without Work Experience walks through each section.
Do I need a cover letter for an accounting job?
Many firms ask for one, especially for public accounting and internships. How to Write a Cover Letter has a four-paragraph method you can reuse for each application.
