Zety is a good resume builder with a pricing model you need to read before you click. In this Zety review the short answer is: if you want a designed resume built quickly from a template, Zety does that job well, and the free plan lets you build and edit everything. What it charges for is the file. The free plan downloads in TXT only, and a PDF or Word file means the $1.95 Pro trial, which renews at $25.95 every four weeks unless you cancel inside 14 days.

Below: what Zety actually is, what each plan includes as of October 2026, where it is strong, where it is weak, and who should stay with it. If you already know you want to leave, our Zety alternative guide covers the options side by side.

Every figure here was read on zety.com’s own home page and pricing page in October 2026. Prices change, so confirm there before you pay.

What Zety actually is

Zety is a document builder. Its home page is titled “Free AI Resume Builder: Create Your Resume in Minutes”, and the navigation is organised around three documents rather than around a job search:

  • A resume builder, described on the site as a way to “Create a resume in 5 minutes”, with AI writing suggestions inside it.
  • A CV maker and a cover letter builder, with matching templates so the documents look like a set.
  • A resume checker the pricing page says can “identify 30+ issues”.
  • Resume, CV and cover letter examples, plus a large career blog.

The builder works in four steps on the home page: pick a template, add ready-made content, personalise the design, then download. You can also import an existing resume instead of starting from a blank page, which matters if you already have one.

Zety pricing: what the plans include

Zety has three packages. Here is what the pricing page lists for each, as of October 2026:

PackagePriceRenewalDownloads
BasicFreeNoneTXT format only
Pro$1.95 for a 14-day trial$25.95 billed every 4 weeksPDF, Word and TXT
Annual$5.95/month$71.40 paid at once, renews each yearPDF, Word and TXT

All three list the resume builder, resume templates, the cover letter builder, cover letter templates, “Unlimited Downloads, Prints and edits”, the resume check and instant job matches. The pricing page says the Pro trial “auto-renews at $25.95 billed every 4 weeks. Cancel anytime.”

Two details carry most of the cost. First, the free plan is limited by format rather than by features. You can build, edit and check a resume for free, and the moment you want a PDF to attach to an application, you are paying. Second, four-week billing means thirteen charges a year, so a search that runs three months on Pro costs roughly $1.95 plus three renewals. If you expect a long search, the Annual package at $71.40 is much cheaper per month, but it is a year paid up front.

What Zety does well

Speed from a template. Zety’s templates are polished, there are many of them, and the builder handles the layout so you never fight margins in a word processor. For someone who has not written a resume in years, that removes the hardest part.

Ready-made phrasing. The builder offers pre-written bullet points and skills for common roles. If you are staring at a blank experience section, picking a few and editing them is faster than writing from nothing.

Matching documents. A resume and cover letter in the same design looks considered, and Zety makes that the default.

Import. Uploading an existing resume to move your details into a template saves retyping.

Where Zety falls short

The trial is easy to forget. A $1.95 charge looks like a one-off. It is the start of a subscription, and the renewal is far larger than the trial. Set a calendar reminder for day 13 the moment you start one.

The free plan is mostly a preview. TXT is fine for pasting into an online form. It is not what most people mean by a resume file, so in practice the free plan lets you see what you would get.

Ready-made content is generic by design. Pre-written bullets are written for a role, not for you and not for the posting in front of you. Recruiters read a lot of resumes, and stock phrasing tends to look like stock phrasing. You still have to edit every line into something only you could have written.

It builds the document once. The work that eats a job search is the repeat work: adjusting the same resume and rewriting the same cover letter for each posting. A builder speeds up the first version. It does much less for the twentieth application.

Who should stay with Zety

Zety is a sensible choice if most of these are true:

  • You do not have a usable resume yet, or the one you have is years out of date and badly formatted.
  • Design matters to you, and you would rather pick a template than build a layout yourself.
  • You need the file this week and can finish inside the 14-day trial, then cancel.
  • You expect a long search and are comfortable paying $71.40 up front for the Annual package.

If that is you, Zety is worth the money, as long as you cancel or switch plans deliberately rather than by accident.

Who should look elsewhere

  • You already have a good resume. You are paying for a builder to recreate a document you own.
  • Your problem is tailoring. If each application needs its own cover letter and its own set of bullets that match the posting, a template does not solve that.
  • You want to pay for a month, not a subscription. Four-week auto-renewal is the default on Pro.
  • You only need a plain, readable file. A word processor and a simple layout do that for free; our guide to an easy resume format shows one.

Zety compared with InstaResume

InstaResume does a different job. You paste your real experience and the job posting, and it returns a cover letter or a set of resume bullet points written for that posting, using the keywords the posting uses. It does not design a resume. The text goes into whatever document you already have, including one built in Zety.

Choose Zety when you need the document. Choose InstaResume when the document exists and every application still needs rewriting. The two also work together: build once in Zety during the trial, download the PDF and Word files, cancel, and do the per-posting writing somewhere that charges for writing rather than for downloads. Our pricing page lists the InstaResume plans.

How to use Zety without overpaying

  1. Build and edit on the free plan first. Get the content right before you pay anything, since nothing about the builder is locked.
  2. Start the trial only when the resume is ready to download. That puts the whole 14 days to use.
  3. Download every format you might need, PDF and Word, plus your cover letter.
  4. Set a reminder for day 13, and cancel from your account if you do not want the four-week plan.
  5. Keep the Word file. It is what lets you edit the resume later without going back to a subscription.

For the per-application step afterwards, our guide on how to tailor a resume to a job description walks through it by hand.

The verdict

Zety is a capable builder with good templates, useful starting content and matching cover letters, and it gets a blank page to a finished resume quickly. Its weak point is the business model rather than the product: the free plan stops short of a usable file, and the $1.95 trial becomes $25.95 every four weeks if you let it. Use it deliberately, for the document, and it is good value. If your resume is already done and the real work is fitting it to each job, you will get more from a tool built for that step. You can try InstaResume free with a posting you are applying to today.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zety free? Partly. As of October 2026 the Basic package is free and includes the builder, templates, cover letter builder and resume check, but it downloads in TXT only. PDF and Word downloads need a paid package.

How much does Zety cost after the trial? The pricing page says the $1.95 Pro trial lasts 14 days and then auto-renews at $25.95 billed every four weeks. The Annual package is $71.40 paid at once, shown as $5.95 a month.

Is Zety legit? Yes, it is an established builder that does what it says. The common complaint is the renewal after the trial, which the pricing page does state.

Can I cancel Zety? The pricing page says “Cancel anytime” on both paid packages. Cancel before the 14-day trial ends to avoid the first four-week charge.

Is Zety good for tailoring a resume to each job? It can hold several versions, and the edits are unlimited, but you do the tailoring yourself. For that step, see our comparison of AI resume tailoring tools.
